ABSTRACT: This study evaluates the infl uence of topography (topographic eff ect) on land cover classifi cation through object-based approach. Tests were applied on Landsat 5 TM refl ective bands, which were classifi ed in their original form and after topographic correction. The study area is located in an agricultural region of rugged terrain in southeastern Brazil. Slope and aspect data taken from Topodata, a database refi ned from SRTM, were used to support the topographic correction procedures. Image processing included a co-registration of all data, followed by topographic correction. Original and corrected images were classifi ed using object-based classifi cation, composed by the steps of segmentation and of decision tree classifi cation. Comparisons of classifi cations were based on accuracy (kappa and overall accuracy), decision tree size and segment size. The results indicate that the topographic eff ect aff ected all metrics involved in the comparison. After topographic correction, classifi cation showed simpler decision tree (fewer nodes) and larger segment sizes. Diff erences between the classifi cation results from original and corrected images occurred on 26% of the total area. The image classifi cation of the corrected data showed kappa and overall accuracy 10% higher. It is recommended that in areas of rugged terrain, where topographic correction should be applied to reduce topographic eff ect on the land cover mapping. |
